Why this site exists
Lithuanian family history is easy to start and hard to finish. The records exist, but they are spread across languages, empires and archives, and the advice online often repeats itself or skips the part that matters. We wanted one place where a descendant could see what survives for a given period, what a document is likely to say and which official page to check before spending money or filing paperwork.
How a guide gets made
- We pick a question readers actually have, such as “which archive holds my parish” or “does my great-grandfather’s passport count?”
- We read the primary or official source first: an archive’s own page, a ministry or embassy page, or a published study.
- We write the guide in plain language and put the date a rule or figure was checked next to anything that can go out of date.
- We mark invented illustrations as illustrative composites, never as real people.
- We cite the sources at the end so you can check them yourself.
What you can hold us to
- No fabricated reviews, ratings or testimonials.
- No claim about a law, a fee or an access rule that we have not seen on an official or primary page.
- A clear statement when we could not confirm something.
- Free and public resources, such as archives and FamilySearch, are cited and never turned into affiliate links.
How the site pays for itself
Lithuanian Roots Project is supported by readers. Some links are affiliate links, and our main partner is MyHeritage, which means we may earn a commission when you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Other tools are described for what they do well, and we say when another one suits a situation better. The full explanation is in our affiliate disclosure.
What we are not
We are not an archive, a law firm or a government office, and we do not do personal research, translations or legal advice. Where a topic needs a professional, such as a citizenship application with unusual facts, we say so.
